Food Hub Operations Manager - Esparto, CA

Capay Valley Farm Shop (CVFS) is seeking an experienced manager to assume operational responsibility for the management of our 3,000 square foot aggregation and distribution facility for local farms and ranches. The Operations Manager (OM) will work closely with a dynamic team of employees to improve core services and drive the organization’s next phase of growth.
CVFS offers a rare opportunity for families and institutions to buy 100% local, seasonal food direct from more than 40 small and mid-scale family farms. Located in Esparto, California, CVFS was established in 2007 to connect Capay Valley producers with regional markets as closely as possible. We are a for-profit, community-based social enterprise that offers services to our clients who include consumers, business partners, and farmers.
  • Operations Lead: Serve as operations lead, supervising Operations Assistant Manager, Operations Associate(s), and Delivery Driver.
    • Manage and print out all paperwork needed for daily pack management.
    • Ensure implementation of pack practices and procedures at daily pack-outs to ensure smooth running operations.
    • Communicate specific and general requirements to Operations Team.
    • Oversee inventory system and management of all products.
    • Oversee implementation of food safety plan, including scheduled cleaning, reporting, and testing.
    • Oversee scheduled maintenance of equipment and vehicles to ensure safe and essential operations.
  • Systems: The OM will need to quickly become proficient with the systems that run the hub’s order fulfillment, inventory management, cleaning, equipment and vehicle maintenance. OM is responsible for maintaining and updating documentation of core systems to facilitate staff training and continual improvement.
  • Business Management: Responsible for operating profit & loss performance with an emphasis on expense management.
  • Management Team: Participate in weekly Management Team meetings to coordinate manager implementation of weekly activities and strategic initiatives. Timely and effective communication with employees via phone, email, and in-person.
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about local agriculture, food hubs, and fresh food distribution.
  • This is a Customer Service business. The position needs a people person to effectively manage staff, work with clients, and build connections to farmers and local food system partners.
  • Operations Manager needs to be entrepreneurial, anticipating challenges and opportunities, and solution-oriented in addressing those opportunities and challenges proactively.
  • The position requires someone who is detail-oriented, good with logistics and scheduling; and numbers-oriented, capable of managing based on financial performance.
  • While the Operations Manager is not responsible for direct sales, CVFS’ success nonetheless requires the OM to be an effective representative—eager to articulate the value of the services offered and committed to exceeding client’s expectations.
  • While the job entails many administrative functions, this is not a desk job: the Operations Manager needs to be hardworking, able to get to work at 8:00am; work weekend shifts; and pitch in to help with pack, move pallets, or drive the delivery truck when the need arises.
  • 3 years of experience as a manager in the food industry.
  • Experience managing warehouse operations.
  • Working familiarity with computers and software including Office applications and cloud-based computing.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and mobility to ascend and descend the rear-end of a box truck.
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods (>20 hrs/wk).
  • Ability to work outdoors in warm and cold weather.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Compensation is dependent on experience. Expected salary range is $27,040-37,440.

Job Description:
The Farm Staff position involves working in all aspects of the farm. This includes tasks such as propagation, transplanting, weeding, irrigation, harvest, post-harvest handling, CSA packing, deliveries, and farmers markets. Tractor work and other tasks may be included depending on the interest level and experience of the individual. Once our CSA season starts, the majority of the farm tasks are centered around our weekly harvest schedule.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone that is interested in starting their own farm some day. We expect you will learn a great deal working here, not only about vegetable production but also about business and marketing.
This seasonal position starts in May and goes through November. Work is 40+ hours/week (5 day work week). Must be able to work weekends.
At least some previous farming experience is required, preferably one season working/interning on a farm.
The ideal candidate for this position has a good work ethic, passion for farming and food, the ability to take initiative, and a good sense of humor. Punctuality and reliability are key. Work here is fast paced. Individuals considering farming as a career encouraged to apply. A number of our former employees have gone on to start their own farms.
This position requires lifting, must be able to lift 50lbs. Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, have a clean driving record and current drivers license.

35-Acre Farmland Lease Opportunity with Peninsula Open Space Trust 

Pescadero Open Space Trust (POST) has just released a request for proposals (RFP) to lease the 35-acre backfield of their Butano Farms property in Pescadero, CA. POST is soliciting proposals from individuals interested in leasing the land for productive agricultural operations.

POST staff will lead a mandatory tour of the site for prospective operators at 10am on April 17, 2015. If needed, a second tour will be scheduled. Please RSVP for the tour by April 10 to

The International Rescue Committee is looking for interns and volunteers in their New Roots refugee farm program in Sacramento

We are in the beginning phase of starting a 4.5-acre farm and educational center in West Sacramento and are seeking interns to assist in the program’s development. In short, the purpose of the program is to enable refugee and community farmers and gardeners to revitalize urban spaces, access agricultural training and nutrition education, gain income through crop sales to local restaurants and markets, and rebuild local food systems.

We are looking for students or recent grads who can assist with the site development and ongoing farm maintenance, provide technical assistance and lead workshops/trainings, conduct research, perform community outreach, develop marketing channels, among other programmatic support tasks. We are also planning to hire part-time employees in the near future, but not at this time.

CSP Farmers Have Until March 31 to Renew Contracts

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is now accepting applications to re-enroll in the ConservationStewardship Program March 31, 2015.  This renewal option is specifically for farmers and ranchers who enrolled in CSP initially in 2011.  Those 2011 enrollees have CSP contracts that expire at the end of 2015.

CSP is a comprehensive working lands conservation program that provides technical and financial assistance to farmers and ranchers to actively manage and maintain existing conservation systems and to implement additional conservation activities on land in production.  Through CSP, participants take steps to improve soil, water, air, and habitat quality, and can also address water quantity and energy conservation issues.

CSP contracts last for five years, at which time they are eligible for renewal.  There are approximately 74 farmers and ranchers with CSP contracts in California that will expire this year, totaling over 85,000 acres that can be re-enrolled to preserve and expand upon critical environmental benefits. 

It Pays to Renew
It is optional to renew an expiring contract, and participants who do not re-enroll can always re-apply and compete for funding in future annual CSP signups.  However, there is significant benefit to renewing now: the process for renewing is non-competitive and much simpler than re-applying through the competitive process later, and participants will avoid any gaps in their CSP payments that would otherwise occur.

NRCS has already mailed letters to all CSP participants with contracts that are set to expire this year.  The producer must then sign up for the renewal offer by March 31, 2014.  Local NRCS offices will then follow up with the producer to discuss renewal criteria and new conservation options; the producer then can decide whether to sign up for another five year contract. 

Renewal Criteria
Participants will need to meet additional renewal criteria.  Under the terms of the 2014 Farm Bill, CSP contract holders can renew their contracts provided: they have met the terms of their initial contract; agree to adopt and continue to integrate conservation activities across the their entire operation; and agree to either meet the stewardship threshold of at least two additional priority resource concerns or exceed the stewardship threshold of at least two existing priority resource concerns by the end of the renewed contract period.

These terms are slightly different than the terms for renewals under the 2008 Farm Bill that were in effect at the time farmers and ranchers with contracts expiring this year signed-up, so it would be wise for producers interested in renewing to check in with their local NRCS office for precise information about how the 2014 Farm Bill renewal terms will work in practice. 

For more information on the program and the process for signing up, the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) has released two free resources.  NSAC’s newly revised Information Alert includes not only sign-up details, but also a complete listing of all of the 119 conservation enhancements available to those considering a contract renewal.

The Information Alert lists these conservation activities in order of their conservation and environmental point values.  The higher the point value, the greater the expected environmental benefit and thus the greater weight they have in terms of both ranking the application among other CSP applications, and calculating the ultimate CSP financial assistance payment the producer will receive.

The renewal process should be fairly simple.  Producers with expiring contracts can contact their local NRCS office with any questions about the renewal process.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in gaining practical field experience in sustainable pest management, applied research, or careers in Cooperative Extension.  This position will assist the county Farm Advisor with a variety of research and information extension activities. Duties include but are not limited to:
                        Field Activities (in Brentwood):
·       Check and service insect traps
·       Help to establish, maintain and harvest research plots
·       Assist with field demonstrations and meetings
Office Activities (in  Pleasant Hill or Knightsen):
·       Maintain records of data collected, as directed
·       Perform routine data entry and analysis on computer
·       Compile data and research records for reports
·       Perform routine office maintenance procedures, as needed
·       Collect weather information and calculate degree days

                        At least 2 years of education, training or experience in an agricultural field (pest management, pomology, plant science, horticulture, etc.) and field experience is preferred. Pest identification skills are desirable. Basic knowledge of computers, familiarity with spreadsheets (Excel), and word-processing (Word) programs is needed. Ability to work flexible hours when needed. Ability to perform physically strenuous field activities (lifting, carrying, harvesting, etc.) in the summer heat. Ability to perform repetitive tasks (counting insects, recording plant damage, etc.) quickly, carefully, and accurately. Must have ability and means to travel to field sites in Brentwood on a flexible schedule (to be reimbursed on a mileage basis). Proof of Liability and Property Damage Insurance on the car to be used is necessary.

TIME:              This is a part time, temporary position for approximately 6-7 months beginning in mid to late March and ending in mid to late September or even into Oct. It will require approximately 8-24 hours per week. Hours are flexible.

SALARY:        Starting at $16.30 per hour plus mileage reimbursement at $0.575/mile
