At Mountain Bounty Farm we grow 16 acres of mixed vegetables and fruit for our local 700 member CSA and Farmers Market. Our thriving small farm is nestled in the beautiful Sierra foothills, surrounded by forest and a short distance from the scenic Yuba river. Since 1997, Mountain Bounty Farm has grown into a successful and inspiring cornerstone of the local community. Internship Details: 
Interns are a core element of our farm crew (total 12-14 people including interns) and participate in all farm activities from greenhouse work to harvest, delivery, and farmer’s markets. Interns work closely with the farm managers to maintain this complex and dynamic vegetable farm. This includes driving tractors, seeding, transplanting, lots of weeding and other crop care, irrigation, harvest, washing and packing produce, driving deliveries, and small amounts of animal and fruit tree care. Interns work 5 days a week (Mon-Fri), 8+ hours a day and are also responsible for doing one CSA delivery per week, two Saturday farmers markets per month, and occasional minor irrigation duties after hours. We average a 40 hour work week over the season, with slightly shorter weeks in spring and fall, and slightly longer weeks at the height of summer. All crew members receive one week of paid vacation during the season after August 1st. Internships at Mountain Bounty are challenging, highly sought after, and immensely rewarding. The vast majority of Mountain Bounty alumni go on to either work at other farms or start their own farms. Interns who excel in their first season may be offered management positions and permanent employment here at Mountain Bounty.

Stipend: $1,000/month plus rustic housing and produce (includes vegetables, fruit, and eggs)

Skills Desired:
Prior farm experience is preferred, but not a requirement. Successful candidates have experience with some type of outdoor labor and/or a strong athletic background. We are also looking for people who are serious about farming as a career. This is a top notch training opportunity for someone who is ready to take on the challenge. We are looking for people who are organized, curious, outgoing and personable, wacky and fun, and very motivated. Applicants should be able to work hard and fast in all weather (it can be cold and wet here in spring and fall, and summer temps are very hot) do heavy lifting, standing, bending, and lots of walking. Soil Born Farms Apprenticeships!

Soil Born Farms is seeking five full-season farm apprentices for the 2016 season. The apprenticeship runs from March 1 to October 31Please submit your application by December 19, 2015.
The goal of the apprenticeship program at Soil Born Farms is to provide training for aspiring farmers by teaching the basic concepts and practical applications of organic food production. At Soil Born Farms, organic food production is a piece of the broader work of the organization, tying food systems into the larger social issues of food security, social justice, and public and ecological health.
This full-time apprenticeship is designed for people who want to pursue a career in sustainable “specialty crop production” or mixed fruit and vegetable farming. Interested applicants can apply with an intention to participate in only the first-year apprenticeship, but the ideal candidate will be interested in pursuing the second-year apprenticeship as well. Apprentices are exposed to all aspects of food production through hands-on field work (40-45 hours/week), formal classes on sustainable crop production, pest management, farm business, animal husbandry and other topics(30-35 hours total). Apprentices will also take part in readings and discussions and monthly regional farm tours. Positions are available each season for Second-Year Apprentices, taking on increased responsibility at either the American River Ranch or the Farm on Hurley Way.
Required Qualifications:
  • Ability to commit to a full-time eight-month apprenticeship (March – October)
  • Commitment to sustainable agriculture
  • Strong interest in pursuing a career in farming or community food systems
  • Interest in working in a physically-demanding position in all kinds of weather
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
An interest in pursuing a career in sustainable agriculture in the Sacramento region
Some experience working or volunteering on farms and/or doing outdoor manual labor
Housing & Compensation:
On site 10’x10’ canvas platform tents with access to shared kitchen, living room and bathroom. Apprentices will receive a stipend for a portion of the hours worked on the farm. There is prepared lunch offered during the work week to eat and sit down with staff together daily. Apprentices will also receive food from the farm (vegetables, eggs, etc) and a stipend for supplementary food.

The California Farm Academy (CFA) is currently accepting applications!

CA Farm Academy 2016 Information Session

CA Farm Academy trains beginning farmers in all aspects of agricultural production through field work, business planning, classes, and farm visits to give participants a solid foundation in what they need to know to start farming. Topics covered include crop planning, soil, pest management, equipment, marketing, business planning, financing, food safety, and more. At the close of the program each student will have completed a farm business plan.  Additionally, qualified graduates will have the opportunity to join the CFA Incubator Program and lease farmland to help launch their own farming operation.  

CFA is a 7 month program of the Center for Land-Based Learning in Winters, CA, which meets February through September. Class times are designed to accommodate work schedules, with classes meeting Tuesday and Thursday early evenings and two weekends per month.

Part-time Irrigation and Pasture Management Job

Casa Rosa Farms
Capay Valley, California

Casa Rosa Farms is a diversified family farm producing pastured meats, eggs and certified organic olive oil. We farm 110 acres in the Capay Valley. Our family has been farming in the Central Valley since emigrating from the Azores in the 1960's. The third generation (Casa Rosa Farms) has been certified organic since 2009. We manage our livestock through a combination of seasonal grazing on native grasslands, intensive rotational grazing using small irrigated paddocks and growing forage crops (alfalfa, peas, three-way) for hay. We also produce other regionally appropriate orchard crops such as figs, pomegranates, pears, apricots on a micro scale for our farmer's markets. We may rotate in other row crops, water permitting. We are committed to renewable energy. Our warehouse cold room and freezers are powered by solar, and one of our ag wells is 100% direct solar powered.

We raise Limousin (Lim-Flex) cattle, which respond very favorably to a grass fed feeding regime, producing lean, flavorful, and very tender meat with a high carcass yield (20 pairs, 30 feeders per year). We also raise California Red Sheep (50 head) and pigs. We are embarking on farrowing pigs this year.

Primary Job Duties: Irrigation, fencing, animal care and feeding under the supervision of the farmer

  • Must be able time irrigations and coordinate changes with supervisor
  • Must occasionally be on call for weekends and nights ( no more than twice per month)
  • Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures. 
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc. 
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately. 
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Work outside and inside, around moving objects, farm animals (cows, sheep, pigs, poultry), and with vehicles and machinery with moving parts. Frequent exposure to dampness and humidity, heat, animals and animal manure, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.

Hours: 32 hours per week, days are flexible. One weekend day per month required

  • Employee status with 30 day probationary period, 3 sick days per year per California regulations

Farm Manager at Maple Rock

Maple Rock Gardens is a unique gem located in Newcastle, California. The 30 acre ranch is open to the public only a couple times per year for tours of the 4 acres of botanical gardens. Every other day of the year, Maple Rock provides produce for High Hand Cafe, which is just 8 miles from the farm. The farm is currently in 4 acres of cover crop as we search for a Farm Manager to take over the operation.
We are looking for someone who is driven, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We have 15 acres of usable land, 10" of summer water and 2" of winter water, access to free manure, two tractors, disc, tiller and many other implements. There is room for new ideas and expansion.

Programs Associate Job Opening

SAGE (Sustainable Agriculture Education) has an opening for a Program Associate to take charge of a variety of program projects and associated communications and administrative tasks. SAGE is a lean, entrepreneurial organization providing leadership at the intersection of agricultural land preservation, urban planning, and healthy food-systems. The ideal candidate has prior experience working in a fast-paced non-profit and is ready to grow their career as a non-profit leader working on issues related to food and farming, planning, and public health.
The position is located at the SAGE office in the David Brower Center in Downtown Berkeley. Areas of responsibility, percentage time (50% to 100% FTE) and schedule are all flexible. The position reports directly to both the President and the Program Director, and will work as part of a team with staff, contract consultants, and project partners.
SAGE was founded in 2001 by Sibella Kraus, the current President. The Program Director is Poppy Davis. Both have extensive experience in food and farming and non-profit management. SAGE’s mission is to cultivate urban-edge places where farming and local food culture can thrive and be celebrated. We work collaboratively with partners including public agencies, farmers, educators, conservationists, health experts, economists, planners, public-interest organizations, and community groups. Our goals are to: (1) cultivate urban-edge places that model sustainable agriculture integrated with resilient communities; (2) broaden the community of supporters for urban-edge farming; and (3) provide expertise, resources, tools and convening opportunities that advance vibrant regional agriculture and help farmers thrive.
Position Responsibilities
Programs (35%)
  • Sunol AgPark - support the AgPark Education/Site Manager and Program Director
    • Liaison between AgPark farmers and SAGE for routine communications
    • In charge of education program scheduling with schools and teachers
    • Coordinate workshops, field days and other public events
  • Beginning Farmer Education - support the Program Director
    • Co-ordinate with partner organizations on outreach to beginning farmers
    • Evaluate program offerings and compile reports on program accomplishments
  • Coyote Valley and Food Works in San Jose - support project team
    • Support the Discover Coyote Valley website
    • Research issues and develop communications materials to engage stakeholders in San Jose in visioning a “food-city” and valuing the agricultural resources of the nearby Coyote Valley
    • Evaluate program activities and compile reports on program accomplishments
  • Provide similar support to other programs as they come on line
Communications and Development (35%)
  • Provide leadership in maintaining the SAGE website
  • Produce quarterly e-newsletters
  • Maintain Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.
  • Support the year-end donor appeal
  • Manage SalesForce and Vertical Response contact databases
