Farm to Market Specialist
Based in Sacramento Valley (Davis), Bay Area (Oakland), or Central Coast (Watsonville) and operates statewide
Part Time – 50-60% Could grow to full-time position
Salary: $48-58K DOE based on full-time salary
Farm to Cafeteria Senior Program Manager
The Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) is a non-profit organization whose mission to build sustainable food and farming systems through policy advocacy and on-the-ground programs that create more resilient family farms, communities and ecosystems. CAFF is a membership organization guided by a board of directors that includes family farmers and others who are passionate about food, farming and the environment. CAFF runs Regional Food Systems projects such as Farm to School projects, Climate Smart Farming campaigns, and providing technical assistance in accessing new markets to farmers around the state. The Farm to Market Specialist works with local farmers and consumers (most commonly, schools, hospitals and corporate cafeterias), and food hubs/distributors to increase access to and demand for local product. The Farm to Market Specialist provides technical expertise and assistance to farmers and food service operators on supply chain logistics, regulations, and best practices for Farm to Institution sales.
% Time
Farm to Cafeteria Project Management
  • Lead and coordinate various Farm to Cafeteria projects to affect system level changes as funding allows
  • Lead research and outreach to farmers to engage in the Farm to Cafeteria Program and provide farm to institution consulting to farmer members as needed
  • Facilitate development and sales of local products with distributor / processor partner(s)

  • Work with Sr. Program Director to identify institutional product needs and work with farmers in production planning and supply chain logistics to meet future institutional demand.
  • Develop and grow relationships with institutional buyers
  • Provide supply chain consulting to partner institutions
  • Develop and deliver market-support trainings (webinars, workshops, farm
    tours, etc.) for partners and farmers statewide
  • Assist planning and leading of farm tours for school and hospital food service
Other Duties:
  • Support project data collection and funder reports
  • Support in fundraising as needed
% Time
  • Provide assistance and expertise on projects throughout CAFF’s other regional offices in working with suppliers on local sourcing
  • Develop and grow relationships with institutional buyers
  • Support regional farm to market activities and actively promote CAFF
    membership with farms & businesses
  • Represent CAFF by participating in community activities and events as
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Participate in staff meetings and collaborate with regional staff statewide
    Handle some administrative duties in the regional office
QUALIFICATIONSEducationBachelor’s Degree in Food Systems, Sustainable Agriculture, Sociology, Economics or equivalent
  • At least 2 years of professional experience in the food distribution field preferred
  • Experience working directly with farmers
  • Experience working with non-profits strongly preferred
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Spanish speaking skills strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated in supply chain systems; agricultural production; direct marketing channels; food distribution,
    and the food service industry.
  • The ability to collect input, research, and make evidence-based decisions and determine best practices
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Resourceful and able to perform a variety of administrative and organizational tasks with a creative
    approach to problem solving
  • Flexibility to work independently, with minimal supervision, as well as collaborate with others in a team
  • Flexibility to work on a variety of projects, simultaneously
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Familiarity with collaborative working platforms such as Salesforce, DropBox, and Google Drive
  • Willingness and ability to work occasional weekends and evenings
  • Applicant must have access to transportation to enable frequent travel throughout the region and beyond.
    Must be able to provide valid driver’s license and valid auto insurance.
